What are domains?

Domainnames on the internet are virtual areas bought buy firms or persons to make their web site easy to remember by humans. That is, servers where they host their data are being connected by an IP or Internet Protocol which consists of numbers. Because nummers are hard to remember domainnames exists.

The Domain Name System or DNS is a system where understandable language from the domainname is transformed into a number that network equipment can read. And this makes DNS one of the main operations for nameservers. In other words, by the use of nameservers different domainnames are being guided to different servers.

Top Level Domain and country code Top Level Domain

Top Level Domain or TLD is the official name for large zones like .com or .org. This in contrast to sub domains which are  subordinated to TLD's. Country code Top Level Domains or ccTLD are a specific group within TLD's where the international abbreviation is being used like .nl or .be. Frequently those ccTLD's are being managed national to the country. For example: For .nl the SIDN (Stichting Internet Domeinregistratie Nederland) controls the TLD and for .be DNS.be.
